I had already written in my last post about how handy green chutney is and how many recipes it can be used apart from from regular chats. Its also one way to preserve the mint and coriander leaves you buy because they tend to wilt within a few days.
Sometimes, my days are really busy and the younger one does not allow me to cook at all. But I have to keep the lunch ready before the elder one returns from school. So that when the green chutney comes in so handy for me. I sometimes make a quick one pot pulao with the green chutney paste or make a simple dal like this one. Its very quick to make and it tastes great too with so many flavours in it. Try it and do tell me how you liked it.
Place the tomato in hot water for sometime. Remove it, the skin can be peeled easily. Cut into small pieces and make a puree by running it in a blender.
Keep your green chutney ready as per the recipe given here.
Cook the tuvar dal in a pressure cooker till soft. Using a whisk beat it to make it mushy. Add the turmeric powder, salt, tomato puree and green chutney. (Add water if its too thick.)Mix well and boil it for 5 -7 minutes .Remove from flame.
Heat the oil in a seasoning pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida. When it crackles, add curry leaves and red chillies.
Pour the seasoning in the dal. Mix well.
Serve with plain rice, cumin rice or even pulao. It goes well with chapatis too!!
See recipe for green chutney here.
You can even make the same recipe with masoor dal or moong dal.
You can even add some sauteed sliced onions to the dal.
