Kathirikkai pitla recipe – Brinjal in coconut gravy

Kathirikai pitla , a cuisine from tamil nadu , is a nice side dish with rice and morkozhumbu( tamil version of kadi, though not exactly). But I just love it with simple rice and dal.

  1. Cook Brinjal in tamarind water along with turmeric powder and salt. Heat oil in another pan.Add red chillies, chana dal, tuvar dal, udid dal, coriander seeds, coconut(half the quantity). Stir for about 4 to 5 minutes.(do not allow them to turn very brown).Grind this mixture adding a little water.
  2. Heat oil in a pan.Add mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and peanuts. Then add the cooked brinjal and then the ground paste. Mix in the cooked tuvar dal. Stir some more grated coconut till they turn a little brown and add it to thicken the gravy further.
