Sabudana Khichdi – Javvarisi Upma Recipe

  • 1 cup sabudana (sago pearls)

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the sabudana pearls thoroughly in a sieve under running water for a couple of minutes. Once washed, soak the sabudana in 1 1/2 cups of water for 4-5 hours or until it softens and turns translucent.
  2. Heat oil in a pan or kadai on medium flame. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add finely chopped green chilies, grated ginger, and diced potatoes. Saute them for a few minutes until the potatoes are slightly cooked.
  4. Add turmeric powder, salt, and sugar to the pan and mix well.
  5. Drain any excess water from the soaked sabudana and add it to the pan. Mix everything well and cook for 5-6 minutes until the sabudana pearls turn translucent and become soft.
  6. Add crushed peanuts and mix well. Turn off the heat.
  7. Garnish the sabudana khichdi with freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
